How many postcode areas are there?
We hold 120 postcode areas in England, Scotland and Wales, split into 2,872 districts. Northern Ireland (BT), the Channel Islands (GY, JE) and the Isle of Man (IM) have postcode areas of their own, which we do not hold, so they are not in that count.
How many postcodes are there in the UK?How areas get their letters
Most areas take their letters from a large town or city in them: NE from Newcastle upon Tyne, NG from Nottingham and PE from Peterborough. London is split by compass point instead: E, EC, N, NW, SE, SW, W and WC.
Postcode areas are Royal Mail's, drawn for delivering post. They do not follow county or council boundaries. Of the 120 areas we hold, 117 have postcodes under more than one council.
