Accessibility

We want everyone to be able to use CheckAPostcode. This page says how the site is made, how we checked it, what we have not checked, and how to tell us when something does not work for you.

How the site is made

  • Every page is plain text and links. The facts are in the page itself, not in a picture.
  • Every link, button and box can be reached with the keyboard, in reading order, and shows where the focus is.
  • Every button, and every link that stands on its own, is at least 44 pixels tall. A link inside a sentence is the height of the line it sits in.
  • No page scrolls sideways, on a phone or at high zoom.
  • Nothing moves, flashes, plays or opens by itself.
  • Looking up a postcode, reading a page and sending an error report all work with scripts switched off. “Use my location” needs scripts.
  • Each advert is one link, labelled “Advert”, and its picture carries its words as text for people who cannot see it.

How it was checked, and what was not

On we checked 64 kinds of page, and states of a page, against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines 2.1, level AA, each at three widths. We measured the contrast of every pair of text and background colours and the size of every link and button, followed the keyboard through six of the pages, and read what the browser tells a screen reader.

That check was done by us, in one browser, Chromium. Nobody from outside has audited the site. We have not yet tested it with a screen reader such as NVDA or VoiceOver, in Safari or Firefox, or on a real phone. Pages added since that day, this one among them, have not been through it.

The check found 7 things that fall short of the guidelines. None of them stops a page from being used. The two that matter most: a number inside a green label on place pages was a little too faint, and when a postcode typed into a question page is not understood, the message saying so may not be read out by a screen reader. We treat each as a fault. This page changes when the site is checked again.

If something does not work for you

Please tell us. Use the error-report form and say which page and what went wrong. It asks for your email address so that we can reply. Or write to Towpath Digital Ltd at Huntingdon Boathaven, The Avenue, Godmanchester, Huntingdon, PE29 2AF.

If you cannot get a fact from this site because of how a page is made, tell us which postcode or place you need and we will send you what the site holds about it another way.
