What is a ward?
A ward, or electoral ward, is the small area that elects one or more councillors to your council. A postcode is placed in one ward.
Where there are two councils, this site shows the ward of the district, borough or city council. A county council has its own areas for elections, called electoral divisions, which can have different names and boundaries. We do not hold those.
What if my postcode is on a ward boundary?
ONS places each postcode in one ward, from a single point for the postcode. A postcode at the edge of a ward can include addresses that are in the ward next door.
If it matters, for example to check which election you vote in, ask your electoral registration office. It keeps the electoral register, which is held by address.
Contact your electoral registration office, on GOV.UKWho are the councillors for my ward?
The councillors elected for the ward are under the answer above: each name, when they were elected and for which party, from Democracy Club’s records of every local election and by-election.
A councillor can stand down or change party between elections, so your council’s own list, linked there, is the current one, with how to contact them.
What parish am I in?
A parish is the most local area of local government in England. In Wales it is called a community. The answer above shows the parish or community for a postcode where ONS gives one.
Not every postcode is in one: many towns and cities have no parish. We hold no parishes for Scotland.
Do wards change?
Yes. Ward boundaries are reviewed from time to time, and wards can be redrawn or renamed. We show the wards in the release of the ONS Postcode Directory we hold, August 2026.
