How we use it

SEPA publishes its flood maps as a map service, one layer for each source (rivers, the sea, surface water and small watercourses) and each likelihood: high, a flood about once in 10 years on average (a 10% chance each year); medium, about once in 200 years (0.5%); low, about once in 1,000 years (0.1%). When a Scottish postcode page is opened, we ask which of them its centre point is inside, and keep the answer for up to 30 days. It is for the centre of the postcode, not each address, and the maps show a long-term chance, not a forecast. SEPA's own maps answer for any address.
