How we use it

ONS counted 1,377,544 postcodes with at least one usual resident or household, as the postcodes were in May 2021; a postcode with no one living in it, or made since, has no figure. Part of a postcode over the border into Scotland is counted for its English part only. ONS changes small counts slightly to protect privacy (record swapping and cell-key perturbation), so a postcode's figure can be a few out. The figures for a sector or district on our pages are the postcodes added up. Residents include anyone living in a care home, hall or other communal home in the postcode.
